As the Philadelphia 76ers move through this final stretch of the season, reports have surfaced that Temple University was considering hiring Sixers assistant coach Sam Cassell for its head coaching opening.
Temple let go of Aaron McKie after four seasons and a 52-56 record. The Owls had expressed interest in bringing in Cassell, who has 14 years of experience being an assistant coach in the NBA. Eight of those seasons have been with Doc Rivers both with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Sixers.
Despite the interest, Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Cassell is not leaving the Sixers any time soon:
Temple has inquired about the 76ers assistant coach for its head-coaching job, a source has confirmed. The source added that Cassell is not leaving the Sixers at this time.
Cassell could leave for a head coaching job in the future. He has interviewed for a few NBA head coaching positions, most recently with the Utah Jazz in the 2022 offseason.
