As the Denver Broncos make waves in the 2023 free agency signing period, fans have to hope the team’s new arrivals fare better than the club’s biggest free agent addition did in 2022.
Last year, the team’s biggest move in free agency was signing pass rusher Randy Gregory to a five-year, $70 million contract. Gregory started last season well, totaling seven QB hits and two sacks in four games, before injuries derailed the rest of his season.
Gregory ended up missing 11 games in 2022 with a knee injury. Broncos general manager George Paton, who signed Gregory last spring, believes the pass rusher will be healthy in time for this year’s offseason program.
“I do think Randy will be ready,” Paton said at the NFL combine in February. “He had a tough season. Started off — I thought he was one of the more explosive players, pass rushers, in the league. Then got [to play the] first three weeks and then had the injury against the Raiders and then took a while to come back.
“When he came back, did some good things. But the fact that he doesn’t have to rehab this offseason will really help Randy. Randy is a dynamic player we need to keep him available. I do anticipate he will be ready for the offseason program.”
After losing Von Miller in 2021, Bradley Chubb in 2022 and Dre’Mont Jones in 2023, Denver will need a pass rusher to step up this season. The Broncos will hope Gregory can stay healthy and live up to his contract going forward.
