There have been numerous questions surrounding Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook’s future and those questions got even hotter on Wednesday night.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have signed running back Alexander Mattison to a two-year deal worth $7 million with a max value of $8 million. The contract also comes with $6.35 million in guarantees.
Mattison wasn’t on the open market for long, nor did he get a large contract. An average annual value of $3.5 millino puts him $2.5 million less than the likes of David Montgomery and Miles Sanders, and that’s a win for the Vikings.
What is interesting here is that Mattison has never shown himself to be capable of more than a mid-tier rotational back. If the Vikings do want to give Ty Chandler more of a run, than I can see using Mattison in his same role, but at that price, I think the Vikings could have done better.
On another note, does this officially spell the end of Cook? I doubt that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will want to pay both of them. He has until Friday, March 17th to release him before Cook has $2 million of his base salary fully guarantee.
