HBO’s The Last of Us season finale breaks viewership record

Season 1’s last episode was the most-watched yet, despite airing alongside the Oscars.

HBO’s The Last of Us closed out its first season on Sunday, with the finale being the most-watched episode yet.

As reported by VarietyThe Last of Us Episode 9 brought in 8.2 million viewers – which is particularly impressive considering it aired during ABC’s telecast of the Oscars. It’s also worth noting that viewership almost doubled from Episode 1, which had a massive debut of 4.7 million viewers, to Episode 9’s 8.2 million viewers – increases like that over the course of a season are relatively uncommon. 

The Last of Us maintained strong ratings throughout Season 1. Episode 4 brought in 7.5 million viewers, despite airing during the 2023 Grammys – an all-time high until Episode 9 set a new peak. Weird how the records keep coming during big entertainment award shows, eh?

It’s no surprise that everyone is eagerly awaiting a second season. Don’t worry: it’s coming – filming might even begin later in 2023, or so says Pedro Pascal.

As for what Season 2 will entail, it’ll begin covering the events of The Last of Us Part 2. Given that the game is around 25 hours long, the showrunners have stated it’ll take more than one season to cover in full. There’ll probably be more infected next go-around as well for anyone itching to see more horrific mushroom zombies.
