Texas A&M University is a school rich in traditions that might seem out of the ordinary to outsiders. Whether it’s Midnite Yell or the Elephant Walk it’s evident that A&M definitely walks to the beat of its own drum.

One of the most well-known traditions was birthed at a football game on January second, 1922.  Texas A&M was in a dogfight against Centre College, and Coach Dana X. Bible was in need of reserves just for a “break glass in case of emergency” situation. That’s when E. King Gill was called from the stands to suit up and stand by. Gill never entered the game, but his readiness dubbed him the twelfth man willing to enter the contest if needed.

The longstanding tradition of the 12th Man is one displayed at every Texas A&M football game where the student section exhibits the spirit of Gill by standing the whole game prepared to be called into action.
