March is a day away, but the Tigers aren’t sitting comfortably in a tournament position just yet.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s latest edition of his “bracketology” has Auburn in a tough spot — the team is predicted to be among the last four byes along with Memphis, West Virginia and Nevada. As a result, the squad is placed as a “bubble team”, so the Tigers may have to have a strong outing in their last two games and the upcoming SEC tournament to solidify their spot in the bracket.
In the latest projections, Lunardi has Auburn as the No. 11 seed in the West bracket and scheduled to face off against the projected No. 6 seed in Iowa State. The ranking is a far cry from where Lunardi projected Auburn at the beginning of the year, as Bruce Pearl’s squad was projected to be a single-digit seed after high rankings in the initial AP Poll and USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
Auburn will get its first chance to get more comfortable heading into March when it plays No. 2 Alabama on Wednesday before finishing the regular season against No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday.
