ESPN says 49ers best fit for Steelers FA cornerback Cameron Sutton

The Steelers could lose cornerback Cameron Sutton in free agency.

The Pittsburgh Steelers top in-house free agent is far and away cornerback Cameron Sutton. Pittsburgh wants to keep him but Sutton will have more than one team interested in bringing him in. According to ESPN, the best fit for Sutton in free agency is the San Francisco 49ers.

Sutton will have multiple suitors given his flexibility to play in the slot; Tennessee, Atlanta and Las Vegas all work here. But with the number of 49ers defensive backs heading to free agency and Sutton’s ability to cover in man and find the ball in zone, the fit works in San Francisco with new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Sutton posted three interceptions and 15 pass breakups for the Steelers in 2022, which were both career highs.

If the Steelers cannot re-sign Sutton, cornerback would immediately become the team’s top offseason need. The Steelers have Levi Wallace, Arthur Maulet and James Pierre but are likely to release Ahkello Witherspoon and William Jackson III to free up salary cap space.
