Usually, when superstar Kylian Mbappe has an open goal mouth — be it for PSG or the French Men’s National team — he’s probably going to score. There’s a reason some see him as the heir apparent to the arguably “GOAT” in Lionel Messi.
But Wednesday threw a bit of a change-up in Mbappe’s direction. As PSG took on Montpellier in a Ligue 1 matchup, Mbappe had a very early opportunity to cash in with a penalty kick. While the attempt was saved, the talisman had a shot at retaking it. And again … Mbappe missed. But this time, a juicy rebound came to his foot.
Did he score? No, no. He sent the ball over the bar.
Woof, what an inexplicably awful sequence for one of the modern faces of soccer:
What a miss! Kylian Mbappé just missed a penalty kick, was given a retake, and missed the second as well

UNBELIEVABLE!
Kylian Mbappé's initial penalty was saved. He retook it, was denied again, and then missed on the rebound.

To add injury to insult, Mbappe would leave this game in the 21st minute with what seemed to be a hamstring ailment. (Extent unknown.)
Kylian Mbappé misses a penalty against Montpellier then gets to retake it and misses it again and now he is coming off after 20 minutes with what looks like a hamstring injury! Nothing is going PSG’s way at the moment… 🤦♂️

At least Mbappe can take solace in knowing his misses didn’t cost PSG a victory. Thanks largely to the exploits of his teammate in Messi, PSG wound up comfortably winning 3-1 anyway. Still, this was an early turn of events that Mbappe will undoubtedly want to forget soon once he heals.
