The Denver Broncos completed their in-person interview with DeMeco Ryans for their head coach opening on Thursday.
Ryans, 38, has quickly risen from defensive quality control coach in 2017 to one of the NFL’s hottest head coach candidates in 2023. He has served as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator since 2021, leading the NFL’s best defense this season with a league-low 16.3 points allowed per game.
Ryans is one of seven known candidates for Denver’s head coach opening after the team fired Nathaniel Hackett last month.
Last week, the Broncos interviewed in-house DC Ejiro Evero, ex-NFL HC Jim Caldwell and ex-Stanford HC David Shaw. (Denver also interviewed Jim Harbaugh virtually, but he elected to stay at Michigan.)
This week, the Broncos interviewed Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris and ex-New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton on Tuesday, followed by Ryans on Thursday. Denver also has an interview with Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn scheduled for Friday.
The Broncos will likely conduct second-round interviews next week.
