I only have seen [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] up close a few times. Whatever the circumstance is, he always has seemed to be in an upbeat mood. That’s what makes one postgame comment after Notre Dame’s loss to Florida State so alarming and eye-opening. Some might call it a complete reversal of his personality in light of how badly this season has gone:
Mike Brey on Notre Dame's season: "I certainly haven’t been able to help them much. I told them that. I’ve done a horrible job with you, fellas. I misread you. I thought we’d be more ready to compete. That’s the boss’ responsibility.”

Woah. It’s not often that you hear of a coach being that blunt with their players, at least not publicly. Maybe Brey is getting ready to retire and just doesn’t feel like playing spin doctor anymore. Or maybe it’s his way of lighting a fire under his team.
Either way, Brey apparently has decided he’s done being publicist in addition to his coaching duties. Not even he can find a silver lining for this season, and that speaks volumes. This is a season that really can cause a longtime coach such as Brey to ponder their future. Perhaps we’ll know whether he’s doing that in a couple of months.
