Pete Carroll says the Seahawks love Geno Smith and want him to return for the 2023 season. Seattle could certainly do worse at the game’s most-important position. Despite Smith’s late turnover issues he finished 2022 with a very-respectable 30/11 touchdown to interception ratio and proved he can operate Shane Waldron’s offense at a high level.
While we ultimately expect Smith to return and start Week 1 next season, the front office should not pass on chances for potential upgrades. They hold the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, which gives them a good shot at most of the quarterbacks in this class. If either Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud are still on the board when the Seahawks are on the clock they have to at least seriously considering drafting them – regardless of their feelings about Geno.
There are also a pair of potential upgrades that are about to become free agents. Tom Brady is one, but his age (45) makes that a poor investment long-term. The other is Lamar Jackson, who’s only 26 and a former MVP who hasn’t even reached his ceiling. For his part, Jackson is in a serious dispute with the Ravens over a new contract and has reached the cryptic Instagram messages phase of discontent.
Baltimore would be best-served to re-sign him, no matter the price-tag. They definitely won’t want to risk him hitting the open market and getting nothing but a high comp pick if he signs elsewhere. The Ravens can obviously get a lot more if they trade him before March 15.
It’s the definition of a long shot, but no harm could come from general manager John Schneider calling Baltimore and asking what it would take. Seahawks great Richard Sherman for one likes the idea. He proposed a Geno for Lamar trade on his most recent podcast. Watch:
