Chargers’ playoff meltdown could be issue for Cardinals’ pursuit of Sean Payton

If the Chargers decide to fire Brandon Staley after blowing a 27-0 lead in the playoffs, the Cardinals could miss out on Sean Payton.

The Arizona Cardinals are in the middle of their search for a new head coach and the No. 1 target for most fans is former New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton.

The Cardinals have requested an interview with Payton. It would appear that the Cardinals would be Payton’s preferred spot, but there was a complication on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Chargers blew a 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round of the playoffs, losing 31-30 on the final play of the game.

Some believe that could lead to coach Brandon Staley’s firing.

If that happens, the Chargers, which have been a team of interest to Payton for a while, could become the favorites to land the Super Bowl-winning coach.

As of Sunday morning, Payton is still the betting favorite to land the Cardinals’ job, but the Chargers’ job has not yet opened.

With how the last calendar year has gone for the Cardinals, Payton getting hired by the Chargers would just be another strange disappointment.
