Florida football put up an embarrassing performance in this year’s edition of the Las Vegas Bowl against the Oregon State Beavers. The battle between Southeastern Conference and Pac-12 representatives was a lopsided one as the Beavs throttled the Gators in a 30-3 trouncing.
It should come as no surprise, then, that the Orange and Blue landed on the wrong side of USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg’s bowl game winners and losers following the conclusion of every matchup except for the national championship game. Here is what he had to offer on Florida’s 2022 campaign including its postseason collapse in Sin City.
A season that once held a little bit of promise — the Gators were 4-2 at the midway point with a win against Utah and competitive losses to Kentucky and Tennessee — cratered down the stretch, leaving Billy Napier as the first Florida coach to post a losing record in his first season since 1979. The low point might’ve been the 30-3 loss to Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl, which saw the Beavers hold the Gators to 1.2 yards per carry and off the scoreboard until a meaningless field goal with under a minute left.
So that is it for the Gators until the spring Orange and Blue game, which has yet to be scheduled. Then next fall the Utah Utes will get their chance at revenge against Billy Napier and the gang on their home field Saturday, Sept. 2 to open up the 2023 schedule.
