We have to have a talk.
We have to have a talk about Alex Grinch, and more specifically, if the USC Trojans and Lincoln Riley should fire their defensive coordinator. It’s not as easy a decision as it might seem. Firing Grinch and getting “just anyone, anyone other than Grinch,” is not a real plan. If USC does fire Grinch, it has to not only have a replacement in mind; it has to know that replacement will agree to come to Los Angeles. Doing the backchannel work behind the scenes and talking to agents or representatives has to be part of the process.
One other really crucial aspect of all this: USC has to dramatically upgrade its defensive roster. If Grinch’s continued presence is keeping top prospects away from the program, that would need to be considered in any decision to retain or fire Grinch.
