The Tennessee Volunteers came, saw and conquered the Clemson Tigers in the 2022 Orange Bowl Friday night with a 31-14 upset win over the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions. While the oddsmakers had favored the ACC title-holders heading into the game, the boys from Rocky Top prevailed with a convincing wire-to-wire win.
Joe Milton III stepped up under the bright lights of the New Year’s Six game going 18-for-27 for 241 yards in the air with three touchdowns and no picks to lead Tennessee. Jalen Wright handled the work on the ground with 89 yards on 11 attempts.
But maybe the bigger story was the Vols’ defense, which harassed Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik the entire evening. Between the tenacity on D and the persistent play on offense, the good guys came away with the win to put the exclamation point on Josh Heupel’s second year at the helm.
