Former Auburn quarterback set to get first NFL start on Sunday

Jarrett Stidham threw 36 touchdowns in the two years he served as Auburn’s quarterback.

A former Auburn quarterback is the next man up for the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted on Wednesday that quarterback Derek Carr would be benched by the team. As such, he’s set to be replaced by the team’s backup quarterback — that quarterback is [autotag]Jarrett Stidham[/autotag], who played for the Tigers from 2017-18.

Stidham was drafted by the Patriots in 2019 with their fourth-round pick, and he stayed in New England until 2022 when he was traded to the Raiders for Las Vegas’ sixth-round pick. Stidham typically plays in preseason games for the Raiders, but hasn’t had any starting action for the team and he’ll make his debut under center in the regular season on Sunday.

Derek Carr has struggled as of late, which likely prompts the change to Stidham. Carr has thrown nine interceptions in his last five games to nine touchdowns and has only had a completion percentage above 55 percent in one of those games despite the team going 3-2 down that stretch. Carr’s benching comes in the midst of the Raiders’ far-off standing in the AFC’s playoff hunt.

At Auburn, Stidham threw 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for 5,952 yards. The team lost the Peach Bowl to UCF during his first year under center and then won the Music City Bowl against Purdue in his second.
