Panthers CB Josh Norman to wear No. 6

After Baker Mayfield acquired the No. 6 from Johnny Hekker and left it behind, “new” Panthers CB Josh Norman decided to grab it off the clearance rack.

The Carolina Panthers’ No. 6 uniform has been on quite the ride this season.

It was first claimed by free-agent signee Johnny Hekker. Prior to his jump to Charlotte, the veteran punter donned that very digit in each of his 10 seasons with the Rams—from St. Louis to Los Angeles.

Then, it was “acquired” by quarterback Baker Mayfield. Hekker, before even getting the chance to wear it in an actual game, came to some kind of undisclosed terms with the team’s new quarterback a week after his arrival in July.

And now, with Mayfield off to (funnily enough) the Rams, the No. 6 was there for the taking for Josh Norman—who officially grabbed it on Tuesday.

Norman—who signed to the practice squad yesterday in light of Jaycee Horn’s wrist injury— is, of course, no stranger to wearing the black and blue. But when he did, from 2012 to 2015, he did it in the No. 24 uniform.

That number currently belongs to fellow cornerback CJ Henderson. So, Norman turned back the clock even further to his high school days—where he wore that No. 6 at Greenwood High School in Greenwood, S.C.

Hopefully—for Norman, the Panthers and that well-traveled number—the 6 stays put for the rest of the season.
