Panthers are second team to move on from Baker Mayfield in five months

The Carolina Panthers have become the second team to move on from former first overall pick Baker Mayfield in five months.

The Carolina Panthers have waived former first overall pick Baker Mayfield. After four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield was traded to the Panthers after a tumultuous ending to the 2021 season. ESPN’s David Newton has reported that Mayfield asked for his release from the Panthers.

Even after only getting a conditional fifth round pick out of Mayfield, a pick that will not become a fourth rounder now, it is impossible to say the Browns did not win the trade with the Panthers. Mayfield will now hit waivers in hopes of landing a new job for the remaining five weeks of the season.
