Twitter’s apparent demise had the Chargers call back an all-time classic random tweet about Chinese food

Maybe we can finally all go get P.F. Chang’s together.

As news of tension and apparent discord at Twitter spread on Thursday night, users of the social media platform began to speculate that they were witnessing the end of an Internet era with the famous blue bird.

In the sports sphere, some decided to relay other means they could be contacted by their followers and mutual follows — given how integral the website can be as a tool of seamless communication. Some looked back and reflected on what they learned about themselves and others over the years in the digital space as they got emotional and considered the future. And, as one does, some decided to commemorate what they felt were some of the funnier and more random tweets in the website’s history. It was almost surreal to witness people talking about the death of Twitter … on Twitter. But then again, I suppose that captures the beyond-chaotic essence of a website where the most left-field thoughts can arise seemingly out of nowhere.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ social media team on Twitter fell into the latter group. If you’re not familiar, one of the squad’s first famous tweets involved a reference to someone needing to find their wife and head over to the commercial Chinese food chain P.F. Chang’s.

Over a literal generation, it’s stood the test of time to our terrific delight:

It’s a reference many in the sports Twitter community still dig up now and then to laugh at — especially as it’s somehow (???) never been deleted. To this day, over 15 years later, we still don’t know who was behind this account or why (as if there needed to be a reason) the Chargers’ official Twitter account shared this information no one needed to know.

As the Twittersphere started to fear the worst (or hope for the best?), whoever runs the Chargers’ Twitter account hilariously called back the First-Ballot Hall of Fame tweet:

One day, I hope whoever this is finally finds their wife and gets some takeout. They deserve happiness, and they deserve a full stomach. Is that not what life is really all about? Food and companionship are the keys to finding joy. Heck, if this (gestures at everything) is all over, I hope we can enjoy a not-groundbreaking but fully competent meal of Chinese food together. Thank you, Los Angeles Chargers, for never forgetting what comes first.

After all we’ve been through, we deserve it, too. And so does the manager of the Twitter account of a professional football team. It’s safe to say we’ve come full circle, folks. Here’s a hearty salute to an all-time tweet.
