Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have been on a collision course forever, even if it has been circuitous because of Joshua’s setbacks.
And Fury believes it will happen.
The WBC heavyweight titleholder has floated the idea of retirement but insists he wants to tangle with Joshua in a massive all-British showdown first.
The two have entered into negotiations in the past but couldn’t come to an agreement.
“I don’t think I can retire today,” Fury said on the High Performance podcast. “Because I need that Joshua fight. We have been trying to make that fight for years. “It’s the fight that people want to see.
“It’s the fight that I want to see as a boxing fan.”
Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) is scheduled to fight Derek Chisora (33-12, 23 KOs) for a third time on Dec. 3 in London. And a fight with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship couldn’t be more attractive.
But “The Gypsy King” said it would be a “travesty” if he didn’t meet Joshua at some point.
Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is coming off back-to-back losses to Usyk. Fury stopped Dillian Whyte in six rounds in April.
“For the last four or five years, there has been this three-headed monster: me, [Deontay] Wilder, Joshua,” Fury said. “Joshua and Wilder have been slain, and I’m the last one standing.
“All of a sudden, you’ve got some new people coming up now: Joe Joyce, Daniel Dubois, Usyk’s gate-crashed the party. Now there’s a load of new blood that wasn’t there five years ago and it’s like, ‘Can you beat this person?’.
“But I think it would be an absolute dying travesty if me and Joshua didn’t fight in this era.”
