Some in the Nets’ front office want to give coach Jacque Vaughn a chance to win with this roster before making any trade decisions, according to a report on Thursday by SNY NBA insider Ian Begley.
Vaughn had the interim tag removed from his title on Wednesday and is starting to show how he envisions running the team as the permanent head coach.
There have been reports the Nets were looking to trade star forward Kevin Durant and star guard Kyrie Irving if the situation did not turn around in Brooklyn after a rough start to the season (5-7). This report by Begley indicates Brooklyn will give Vaughn time to coach the team how he sees fit and try to put his mark on this team.
Begley expanded on what he’s heard regarding the future plans for this Nets roster:
“One person in touch with the club in the wake of the Vaughn decision said some Nets decision-makers want to give the 47-year-old an earnest chance to win with Durant and the rest of the roster. They don’t have any set plans to tear the roster down and start over. Those moves may come. But the intent among some Nets decision-makers is to evaluate the roster after Vaughn has had time to lead the group.”
Brooklyn is 3-2 since Vaughn became acting head coach and have had dominant wins over the Washington Wizards (128-86) and the rival New York Knicks (112-85). The Nets look to continue their strong performance under Vaughn on Saturday as they visit the Los Angeles Clippers (7-5).
