The Drake Maye love continues.
While UNC fans know just how good Maye can be, the rest of the national media is starting to find out. One analyst who has been on the Maye bandwagon early this year is CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli who releases weekly quarterback rankings during the season. Maye climbed as high as number two overall a few weeks back but this week, he’s in the top spot.
Fornelli ranked May as the top quarterback in all of college football this week after UNC moved to 8-1 on the year with the win over Virginia last Saturday afternoon. Maye moved up a few spots from No. 3 to No. 1:
It was a big week for QBs not having their best days, but Drake Maye moved to No. 1 this week because his bad day still included 293 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Virginia. I’ve been touting Maye all season long, and now draft analysts are saying things like he’d be the first QB taken in the draft this year if he came out. Now, take that with a grain of salt because they said the same thing about Kentucky’s Will Levis a few weeks ago, and the cycle of The Next Great QB Prospect always begins with “this guy I haven’t seen play for three years yet is great.” Then, when they enter their third year with the draft looming, they get nitpicked to death. So enjoy the love while you can, Drake. It won’t last forever.
Maye has been fantastic for the Tar Heels all season long but is not receiving the Heisman hype he should be getting. The only thing Maye can do right now is to continue to play at a high level and get the Tar Heels higher and higher on the College Football Playoff rankings.
Maybe then he will get the recognition he deserves.
