It’s the battle for the Oil Can trophy as the San Diego State Aztecs and the Fresno State Bulldogs clash for a late night showdown. Both teams come into tonight’s matchup riding a two game win streak. The winner of this game will control its own destiny to the Mountain West Title Game.

Run Game

It’s simple to win this game you have to run the ball. In the last two games for the Bulldogs they have ran for over 380 yards total. Malik Sherrod has also been a big boost in the Dogs run game. With over 20 carries and nearly 100 yards during the two game win streak. The Aztecs give up nearly 150 yards on the ground. If the Bulldogs want to have any success offensively they have to stick to what has been working the best and that is make Mims the bellcow.

Defense

After a rough start to the season Kevin Coyle has gotten this group back on track. The Bulldogs defense in the last two games have given up 19 points and haven’t allowed a touchdown in six quarters. Now the Dogs will face a struggling offensive team in the Aztecs. The key to this one will be to make the Aztes beat you through the air. San Diego State ranks 10th in the conference in passing yards and 8th in scoring at just 19.1 points per game. Most of the Aztecs succes on offense comes through the running game with both the running backs and quarterbacks. If the Bulldogs can contain the San Diego State run game it could be a long night for the Aztecs.

Predictions

This game could be a low scoring physical defensive battle. Both teams don’t like each other, both teams want to bring home the oil can trophy, and both teams would like to control their own destiny for a chance at the MW title game. This game will be close but Jalen Cropper will make a big play and lift the Bulldogs to a victory.
