The Los Angeles Lakers have stumbled out of the gate, triggering early speculation about possible roster moves. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, LA is still uneasy about the status of former All-Star Russell Westbrook.
Charania reported the Lakers and new head coach Darvin Ham would find a meaningful, productive role for Westbrook “in a perfect world,” but the club is also keeping its options open. With limited trade assets left, the Lakers front office can’t afford to miss on any potential trade.
One target for LA could be Charlotte’s Terry Rozier. Charania reported the Lakers and Hornets discussed a multi-team trade scenario over the summer, though nothing materialized. LA and Indiana were also engaged in trade talks in the offseason.
Rozier would provide more shooting and perhaps serve as a better complimentary point guard to Anthony Davis and LeBron James. Rozier averaged 8.5 assists last season and shot 40% from 3.
Los Angeles has also been tied to San Antonio’s Josh Richardson. As the season matures, it’s likely more deals will become available to the Lakers as clubs consider their short-term and long-term goals. Treading water until then could prove difficult for the Lakers.
