Christian McCaffrey to wear No. 23 as a 49er

Christian McCaffrey has a new team, the 49ers, and a new number, 23

The numbers Christian McCaffrey wore at Stanford and with the Carolina Panthers are taken on the San Francisco 49ers.

So, what number will the running back be wearing as he returns to the Bay Area?

McCaffrey passed his physical and that meant the Niners could add him to their active roster on Friday.

That they did and the former Stanford great will have to settle for new digits.

He’s on the roster and will wear No. 23, probably as early as Sunday when the Niners play host to the Kansas City Chiefs.

McCaffrey wore No. 5 at Stanford. He wore No. 22 as a Panther.

The No. 5 belongs to Trey Lance, and Jeff Wilson Jr., another RB, dons No. 22 for the Niners.

McCaffrey was dealt to the Niners late Thursday for a bunch of draft picks.
