The Green Bay Packers went up 17-3 in the first half, got to halftime with a 10-point lead and looked well on their way to a comfortable win over the undermanned New York Giants on Sunday morning in London.
Brian Daboll’s team had a much different plan.
The Giants scored 17 straight points in the second half to take a 27-20 lead and then held on for a 27-22 upset win over the Packers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
The only points scored by the Packers in the second half came on a planned safety by the Giants with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
New York’s defense closed it out by stopping Aaron Rodgers on 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-1 from the 6-yard line to force a turnover on downs. On the final play of the contest, Rodgers was sacked before he could get off a Hail Mary attempt.
The collapse for the Packers came on both sides of the football.
Over a five-possession stretch, the Giants scored 24 points and amassed 338 yards of total offense. In the second half, the Packers offense punted twice, had a turnover on downs and the failed end-of-game play.
New York converted 6-of-11 opportunities on third down and finished with 125 rushing yards. Saquon Barkley produced 106 total yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. For the first time all season, Daniel Jones passed for over 200 yards.
Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of 39 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, but he took two sacks and only averaged 5.7 yards per attempt. In the run game, Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon received only 19 total carries.
Neither team had a turnover. The Packers committed seven penalties, including four giving the Giants a first down.
The Packers are 3-2 after five games, and LaFleur’s team now has a long flight back to Green Bay and a week of prep ahead for the New York Jets.
