On Saturday night, the Aggies will look to upset No. 1 Alabama for the second consecutive season.
The history between these two programs began in January 1942 when they stepped on the gridiron for the first time, in Dallas, TX, and the Aggies were defeated by a score of 29-21. Until the 2000’s, the Aggies and Crimson Tide played three other times – January 1968, September 1985 and December 1988 – with the Aggies’ single victory coming from their January 1968 match-up (20-16).
Since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012, they hold a record of 2-8 versus the Crimson Tide with their two bookend victories coming in 2012 and 2021. In 2012, “Johnny Football” won a tightly contested contest, 29-24, and lit-up the box score with 253 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and 107 yards on the ground. He defeated a talented Alabama team lead by AJ McCarron, Eddie Lacy, and Amari Cooper, to name a few.
This past season, Zach Calzada defeated Bryce Young, at Kyle Field, in an exciting shoot-out, 41-38, in which a strong first quarter (17-7 Aggies) helped hold off Alabama’s 28-point second half. Calzada threw for 285 yards, three passing touchdowns and one interception. Bryce Young threw for 369 yards, three passing touchdowns and one interception, and the Crimson Tide rushed for 179 yards. The Aggies drove the field in the final two-minutes of the game to get in range for a 28-yard, game-winning field goal as time expired.
The Aggies will look to play spoiler, once again, following a disappointing effort this past Saturday.
