The Miami Hurricanes aren’t ready to make a switch at the quarterback position just yet. Following a disappointing performance two weeks ago in the loss to Middle Tennessee, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will still be the starter for Week 6 against the Tar Heels.
Head coach Mario Cristobal reaffirmed his belief in the quarterback after benching him in the second half of that loss.
Cristobal met the media earlier this week to discuss the upcoming matchup against UNC and while there may have been the potential to switch to Jake Garcia, the Hurricanes believe that Van Dyke still gives them the best chance to win:
“We are honest about the fact that Tyler has played great football here for a long time and you don’t turn on your quarterback because we had a bad day as a program,” Cristobal said Monday morning on his weekly local radio appearance on WQAM. “You make sure you do things and install things and work on things that the quarterback and supporting cast feels comfortable with and at the same time you recognize and acknowledge Jake (Garcia) did a great job and has a super bright future here at Miami.”
Saturday’s game will be an important one for both teams as UNC is 1-0 in conference play while this is the opener for the Hurricanes. The Coastal Division appears to be wide open, especially with Pittsburgh’s loss to Georgia Techa a week ago.
And the game very well could come down the quarterbacks as Drake Maye and Van Dyke will be in the spotlight.
