Week 3 of the 2022 college football season is officially upon us, and for Texas A&M, Saturday night’s primetime matchup against the 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes at a sold-out Kyle Field could be season-defining for the Aggies who are still reeling from their shocking week 2 17-14 loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Leading up to the matchup which is set to kick off this Saturday at 8:00 PM Central at Kyle Field, Aggies Wire will continue to provide every bit of information needed to prepare you for the game, hopefully answering any lingering questions you may have in the process.
Texas A&M (1-1) is entering week 3 sitting near the back end of the top-25 of both the USA Today Coaches Poll (#22) and the AP rankings (#24) coming off of one of their worst offensive performances in years, resulting in quarterback Haynes King throwing for less than 100 yards in the game. Conversely, the 2-0 Hurricanes have risen to #13 in both rankings and are averaging 50.0 points per game, led by their quarterback and 2023 NFL Draft prospect Tyler Van Dyke.
Even though my confidence in the Aggies initially plundered after last weekend, history tells me that Jimbo Fisher and his staff know that they have the pieces in place to turn things around. All we can do is wait and watch it unfold as the team has a lot of redeeming to do in front of over 100,000 Aggies on Saturday night. With that, here are a couple of areas of concern I have for Texas A&M going into this weekend:
For the Aggies, consistency at Quarterback
It’s Max Johnson’s turn to show what he’s capable of within this Texas A&M offense. With 14 games under his belt and an abundance of SEC experience, Johnson could just well be the calming and confident presence in the pocket that the team has been looking for in order to reach their true potential as an offensive unit. developing a consistent rhythm in the passing game is a must in order to defeat Miami on Saturday night, and prepare the offense for the tough SEC schedule in the weeks ahead.
Miami’s Defensive line vs. Texas A&M’s Offensive line
When scouting any opponent, immediately pointing out the dominant position group on either side of the ball is important to understanding the focus needed to develop a gameplan. For the Hurricanes, the defensive line is that position group, with Leonard Taylor, Darrell Jackson Jr., and Elijah Roberts who all bring tremendous size and strength against an Aggies offensive line that can match them pound for pound, but have struggled in their first two games this season. With what looks to be the return of starting center Bryce Foster, this addition could finally help Texas A&M’s O-line find their groove in the stout competition the Hurricanes present.
