Lincoln Riley has a long-term plan in recruiting, and it has often paid off

Lincoln Riley recruited Malachi Nelson to Oklahoma for three years, then brought him to USC when he moved. The long-term plan emerges in Riley’s overall strategies.

On The Riley Files, Oklahoma insider Kegan Reneau outlines the long-term vision and planning architecture of Lincoln Riley, going back to his Oklahoma days.

“When Oklahoma went on their run in 2015 and 2016, I think they really were able to sell a proof of concept of what we’re doing. We’re still Oklahoma, we’re still a championship pedigree program,” Reneau said. “When you identify kids early and you sell them that for two years, you have a guy like CeeDee Lamb that actually commits to Oklahoma, decommits, and then recommits again.

“It just goes to show that early on for Lincoln, he did a really, really good job of identifying and evaluating. He offered Spencer Rattler after his freshman season in high school. He had recruited him for three years before he had gotten to Oklahoma. The same could be said for what Malachi Nelson is like for USC. He was basically Oklahoma’s main target as a quarterback for three years. So they did a really good job getting in early on kids. They did a really good job developing relationships with them. Then you have that added success on top of it, and you can sell the Oklahoma brand. I think that’s really what is able to help Oklahoma out, not just during when Lincoln was there, but even what you’re seeing a little bit right now, how Oklahoma’s on a hot streak. Oklahoma is going to continue to go on a run here.”
