Story update: The Broncos announced Tuesday afternoon that Brandon Johnson has been placed on injured reserve, ruling him out for the entire 2022 season. He was not waived with an injury designation as originally reported. See our original post below.
Brandon Johnson’s impressive summer with the Denver Broncos is not ending the way we expected.
Johnson won’t make the team’s 53-man roster, at least not initially.
Denver will waive Johnson (ankle) with an injury designation, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Johnson suffered a high ankle sprain in the team’s preseason finale on Saturday.
If he clears waivers, the undrafted rookie is expected to reach an injury settlement with the Broncos, which would make him a free agent. After that, Johnson will presumably be a candidate to return either on the practice squad or initially on the active roster before being moved to injured reserve.
One way or another, Denver is expected to bring Johnson back, he’s just not going to be on the initial 53-man roster that’s due at 2 p.m. MT today.
We are tracking all of the Broncos’ roster moves on this page.
