John Wolford’s status for preseason finale is unclear due to fingernail injury

John Wolford didn’t practice Thursday due to an injury to his right thumbnail, and it’s unclear if he’ll play on Saturday

The Rams’ competition at backup quarterback just got a little bit more interesting. Sean McVay told reporters after practice that John Wolford didn’t participate against the Bengals because during Wednesday’s session, he suffered an injury to the thumbnail on his throwing hand.

He said it was difficult for Wolford to grip the football, which is why the team held him out of practice today. McVay said if it was on his left hand or if he wasn’t a quarterback, it “would be a non-issue.” Unfortunately, his status for Saturday’s preseason finale is now unclear, which could mean Bryce Perkins gets all of the reps at quarterback again like he did in the opener against the Chargers.

While McVay isn’t sure if Wolford’s thumbnail fell off, he said after practice on Wednesday, it looked like it would eventually fall off. Ouch.

McVay said last week that the team is still evaluating the backup quarterback situation and while it seems Wolford is the favorite to remain QB2, Perkins might have a chance to take over that role if he impresses on Saturday against the Bengals.
