Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will take a measured approach to the rest of training camp this summer while working hard to gain back weight he lost after an appendectomy.
Speaking with reporters for the first time during training camp, Burrow confirmed he’s eating pretty much anything and everything while trying to gain back lost weight.
Burrow wouldn’t say exactly how much weight he lost but noted that getting opened up like that to deal with the ruptured appendix has an impact on core muscles.
As captured by The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr., Burrow still expects to be all the way back to normal by the opener:
Burrow says he doesn’t want to disclose how much weight he lost but he’s “working to get it back.”
That’s clearly been a big part of this process of feeling back to normal. Said he definitely expects to be where he needs to be by opener.

Burrow also confirmed he’s unlikely to play during the preseason, though that was expected well before the start of his training camp was derailed by the medical issue.
While weight loss might be a valid concern when it comes to durability and taking hits, Burrow has plenty of time to add weight back to his frame and ideally, the organization remade the offensive line in the hopes of helping keep him upright, anyway.
