The U.S. women’s national team will face newly crowned European champion England in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on October 7.
The high-profile clash is contingent upon England securing World Cup qualification from two September matches. The Lionesses must draw away at Austria or, failing that, win at home against Luxembourg.
England won Euro 2022 at Wembley on Sunday, defeating Germany 2-1 in extra time after Chloe Kelly’s dramatic winner.
The USWNT, meanwhile, just won a continental title of its own by defeating Canada in the CONCACAF W Championship final last month.
“To get a chance to play the European champions in London at Wembley is an opportunity that doesn’t come around very often, so we’re all thankful that the match could be arranged, and we’ll be hoping that England finish their qualifying campaign in September,” said USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski.
“This is exactly the kind of match we need at exactly the right time in our World Cup preparations so we can test ourselves against a very talented England team. I saw England play live at the Euros, and I’m looking forward to an amazing atmosphere at Wembley and another big event for women’s soccer on Oct. 7.”
The two countries most recently met in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, a match that ended in a 2-0 win for the U.S. Before that, the USWNT defeated England 2-1 in a dramatic 2019 World Cup semifinal.
U.S. Soccer has said that the USWNT will play a second friendly in Europe following the game at Wembley, with a date and opponent to be confirmed soon.
