The 2022 Major League Baseball first-year player draft took place July 17–19 in Los Angeles, California.
The 2022 MLB draft was 20 rounds. Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello served as a Major League Baseball Network analyst during the first round.
Ten student-athletes on the Vols’ 2022 roster were selected during the MLB draft.
Senior third baseman Trey Lipscomb was selected by Washington in the third round (No. 84 overall).
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Lipscomb appeared in 66 games for the Vols in 2022. He totaled 22 home runs, 84 RBIs, 68 runs, 89 hits, 19 doubles, three triples, 26 walks and four stolen bases.
Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline detailed Lipscomb signing with Washington.
“Third-rounder Trey Lipscomb signs with Nationals for $758,900 (full slot 84 value),” Callis announced. “Believe that’s most for a 4th-year college bat in last five drafts. Led SEC with 84 RBI in first year as starter, pop to all fields, good discipline, at least average D (defense) at hot corner.”
