2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

After many players took last week off following the 150th Open Championship in Scotland, several big names are back in the field this week for the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, including Patrick Cantlay and Will Zalatoris. Detroit Golf Club (the North Course) will host the event for the 4th time since it was added to the tour schedule in 2019.

Below, we look at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions.

Last year’s winner, Cameron Davis, will try to defend his title and is among the favorites with the 5th-best odds to win. Cantlay, the 4th-ranked player in the world, is the betting favorite, followed by Tony Finau, who won the 3M Open Sunday. Max Homa, Cameron Young and Adam Scott are among the other notable names in this week’s field as we inch closer toward the FedExCup playoffs.

Detroit Golf Club isn’t an overly long course, playing around 7,350 yards as a par 72. It typically makes for some easy scoring conditions, with the winning score the last 3 years being 18-under, 18-under and 25-under. It has wide fairways which puts more emphasis on approach shots rather than accuracy off the tee.

Will Zalatoris (+1500)

Zalatoris seems to thrive when conditions are difficult, which is why he performs so well in the majors. But he can also go really low thanks to his excellent iron play, knocking approaches close consistently. He came in 77th last year in his tournament debut, but Zalatoris’ ball-striking typically keeps him in contention more often than not.

Davis Riley (+4000)

Riley will be looking to bounce back from a missed cut at the 3M Open last week, and his debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic is a great opportunity for him to do so. He’s been one of the better iron players on tour this season, despite slipping to 64th in Strokes Gained: Approach. I like his chances this week after making 8 straight cuts and finishing in the top 10 three times prior to last week’s slip-up.

Rocket Mortgage Classic picks – Contenders

Russell Henley (+6000)

Henley has faded a bit this season, finishing outside the top 40 in his last 5 events. But he also hasn’t played a lot, so his opportunities have been limited. Like Riley, he’s an excellent ball-striker, ranking 3rd on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach and 23rd in total strokes gained.

Cameron Champ (+6000)

Champ is a bomber off the tee, and with wider fairways this week, errant tee shots won’t cost him as much as some other courses. After missing the cut 5 starts in a row, he tied for 16th last week at the 3M Open. He should keep up things up this week in a tournament he’s finished T-12 before.

Rocket Mortgage Classic picks – Long shot(s)

Harris English (+10000)

English missed most of the season due to injury, sitting out from February to the middle of June. But he’s back now and has made the cut in 3 of his last 4 starts – including a T-19 at the Travelers Championship. Now that he’s knocking some rust off, English could find himself in contention this week where the scoring conditions won’t be terribly difficult.

Callum Tarren (+10000)

Tarren fired a 63 in Round 2 of the 3M Open and wound up finishing T-7, his 2nd straight top-25 finish. He was in contention at the John Deere Classic where he tied for 6th, and he also played well at the U.S. Open. This might be the week he breaks through and pushes to win his 1st tour event at age 31.
