With an Open Championship win, Scottie Scheffler’s 2022 could be an all-time top-10 season

An all-time season for the ages? It’s within reach.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Charles Curtis is filling in for Andy Nesbitt.

I should have known it waking up on Friday morning and not have been surprised at all: There’s Scottie Scheffler running up the leaderboard of the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews.

The world No. 1 is in the hunt. And if he wins the British Open? It wouldn’t be a stretch to argue that it’s a top-10 all-time PGA Tour season.

Obviously, the GOAT has the GOAT season: Tiger Woods’ 2000 included nine wins, three of which were majors. All-time greats like Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Byron Nelson had ridiculous years.

Scheffler’s resume? Three wins at the moment, one major (the Masters, of course). A fourth and a second major would be incredible (and, oh, by the way he was T2 at the U.S. Open!).

The question to me is whether you consider Jordan Spieth’s ridiculous 2015 a top-10 year. That was: Five wins, the British Open title AND the Masters. A second-place finish at the PGA, too.

When we’re talking about modern golf? Heck yeah, Scheffler’s in there. But all-time? Let’s see if he wins at St. Andrews, and remember: There’s still plenty of golf left to play.
