Around the Big Ten: consultant and strategist thinks USC should embrace Rutgers

USC and Rutgers bring a good dynamic in terms of media markets.

USC is going to find value in playing Rutgers, so says one media strategist who believes that the Pac-12 program

Strategist and consultant Tony Altimore made a recent podcast appearance with Matt Zemek of TrojansWire and he said that USC should actually want to regularly play against Rutgers.

USC and UCLA are slated to join the Big Ten in 2014. Altimore, in addition to being an industry expert, is also a graduate of USC.

“It is a great movie. It’s a smart move. And, and I think it’s not going to be as hard as a lot of other people think, you know, I also did a lot of stuff in fundraising development. And so, you know, from a fundraising standpoint, one of the silliest things… is that for USC, the more opportunities we can have to put USC in New York and D.C. and Chicago, the better,” Altimore said.

“We don’t raise money in Pullman (Washington State), we don’t raise money in Lincoln (Nebraska) either, but we raise money when we’re in New York. So it’s like give us those Rutgers games. The last time I was there, our DC game with UVA and everybody who was everybody from Washington with their, you know, those are, those are good games for the school. And so we’re gonna have more of them and I love it.”

With the 2014 addition of Rutgers (the New York market, ranked the largest in the country) and Maryland (Washington D.C., ranked seventh-largest), the Big Ten already was in some of the largest markets in the nation with their member institutions. Now with the addition of two Los Angeles universities, the Big Ten has a strong grip on the second largest media market in the country.
