It’s the offseason in the NBA which means there are rumors swirling around every big star at every turn and the Philadelphia 76ers are a team that is involved with a ton of it.
The Sixers are looking to build a complete roster around Joel Embiid and James Harden as they move forward with their title hopes in the 2022-23 season. They have made a few moves to bring in tougher players who can give the team a spark when needed, but they probably need more in terms of talent.
Shams Charania of The Athletic and The Stadium reported that the Sixers were among several suitors to trade for Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving. However, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report refuted that as he reports that the Sixers actually have no interest in Irving:
Irving’s status is of course connected to Durant’s trade outcome as well, but his number of possible outcomes seems far fewer than Ayton’s. While the Mavericks and Sixers have been discussed as theoretical destinations for Irving, league sources contacted by B/R have strongly discounted Dallas and Philadelphia’s interest in the All-Star guard.
The initial report from Charania did not make much sense. While Irving is an elite talent and he is a terrific player, he is not a reliable one in terms of availability and that is a big red flag when it comes to his trade value in this league. He also just played with Harden in Brooklyn and it is assumed that Harden and Irving are not on great terms.
Either way, the Sixers need more in terms of talent and it will be interesting to see where they go to get it over the next couple of weeks before training camp in early October.
