As backup, Sam Howell will be ready when it’s time to start

Former UNC football quarterback Sam Howell says he will be ready when his time comes to start for the Washington Commanders.

Former UNC football quarterback [autotag]Sam Howell[/autotag] saw his draft stock tumble back in late April, going on Day 3 to the Washington Commanders. Now, Howell will get to learn behind Carson Wentz in D.C. and the Commanders believe he will eventually be their starter down the line.

But when exactly?

Howell will be the backup going into the year but there is a chance he could see playing time earlier than expected. And if that happens, the quarterback will be ready to go for the Commanders.

Howell recently caught up with Kevin Patra of NFL.com to talk about the opportunity that awaits:

“For me, I’m just going to embrace my role,” Howell said. “Do everything I can to just try and get better each and every day. And when my name is called, I’ll be ready.”

So far, Howell has been working with Wentz and Taylor Heinicke, so there’s expereince there to learn from. The best situation for Howell just might be to sit and learn, then develop into a franchise quarterback.

And if that happens, then he could end up being a big steal for the Commanders.
