Anthony Evans may be the most underrated wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class. As a Top-50 wide receiver prospect in the country, and a Top-60 ranked player in Texas, Evans is going into his final senior season at Judson High School in Converse, Texas, with the hope of having his best statistical season yet as he continues to ponder his college choices.
Evans committed to Arkansas in November 2021, but after receiving several offers, Evans decommitted on April 23rd, and re-opened his recruitment. Now A&M is making its final push, and he officially made his way to College Station on June 17th.
In his first starting season during the 2020 campaign, Evans recorded 10 receptions for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns, maintaining a 27-yard average per reception in 7 games played. During his 2021 junior season, Evans played in 10 games, making 35 receptions for 491 yards and 3 touchdowns, while having a 14-yard average per reception. At the end of his 2021 season, Evans was selected Texas District 27-6A first-team, and began his steady ascendance up the recruiting ranks, continuing to this day. Evans also participates in track and field as a long jumper and 200-meter runner.
As a prospect, Anthony Evans currently stands at 6-0, 172lbs, and checks all the fundamental boxes with the ability to separate, catch and outsmart defenders, all vital in order to have success at the next level. On tape, Evans shows great twitchiness at the line of scrimmage, beautifully quick footwork, and soft hands, and instantly shows his track speed, getting on top of his defenders as soon as the ball is snapped. He also displays great catch radius and consistently utilizes his elite athleticism and length while making tough catches in press coverage.
His route running is pretty basic at this stage with a focus on go routes and post routes due to his overwhelming speed advantage, though does show a knack for finding holes in zone coverage and reading defenses pre-snap, and some run-after-catch ability while he navigates the open field. He’s also been used in the run game mainly in end-arounds, having great success while weaving his way through defenders, showing great balance and body control while displaying the 2nd gear in his speed arsenal.
