The worst part of working at the cemetery was the cold. When Ryan started his job in landscaping at the St. Joseph’s cemetery in Yonkers, the weather was frigid. In March 2021, he said, the temperature regularly started in the 20s. To punch in by 7 a.m., he needed to leave his home about 40 minutes earlier to make it on time. During his first couple of weeks, he walked around the cemetery taking Christmas wreaths off the gravestones. “I had about eight layers on,” Ryan said. “And we’re just out there.”
