Diamond Heels upset top seeded Virginia Tech

The Diamond Heels take care of business early upsetting the Virginia Tech 9-2 to advance to the Semi Finals of Atlantic Coastal Conference.

The No. 8 UNC baseball program brought the bats out early in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament with an upset win over No. 1 Virginia Tech in Pool A.

UNC advanced to the semifinals with the 10-0 win on Friday.

The Tar Heels got off to a hot start in their last few games, and despite being the underdogs, they got off the leash early in the first inning. The hits came quick as the Tar Heels put four runs on the board, including Vance Honeycutt’s 18th home run of the season, which tied the UNC freshman record. UNC made it all the way down to their ninth batter, nearly clearing the line up in the first inning.

In the second inning, more fireworks followed after UNC sat the Hokies down with a quick three and out, Danny Serretti added a home run of his own to push the Diamond Heels’ lead to 5-0. Honeycutt rejoined the home run party, hitting his second home run at his second at bat, breaking the freshman home run record in the season.

Serretti followed up with another home run in the fourth inning, blasting the ball over the wall for a 6-0 UNC lead.

UNC would add more runs in the seventh and ninth innings to seal the 10-0 win.

The Diamond Heels’ upset victory gives them a 12-2 record in May, setting them up for a semi-finals match up against Pool D winner, No. 4 Notre Dame. The two teams are set to meet Saturday at 1 p.m with the winner moving on to the ACC championship game Sunday.
