The Philadelphia 76ers do not have a draft selection in the first round of the 2022 NBA draft: That pick is under the control of the Brooklyn Nets due to the James Harden deal.
However, that could change if the Nets defer the pick until 2023. They have until June 1 to make that decision.
Until that decision, now is the time to look at the past draft history of the Sixers and see where they went right or wrong in some re-drafts.
In the 2004 NBA draft, the Sixers were coming off a disappointing season during which nothing went right after they signed Glenn Robinson to be the second star to Allen Iverson.
After a playoff appearance in 2003, the Sixers stumbled to a 33-49 record as Iverson played in only 48 games, Robinson played in 42 and coach Randy Ayers was fired after 52 games. Chris Ford took over and went 12-18.
Philadelphia held the No. 9 pick in the 2004 draft and selected athletic wing Andre Iguodala out of Arizona with the selection. He went on to be a starter on a playoff team his rookie season, and he made an All-Star appearance with the Sixers in 2012 before being sent to the Denver Nuggets in the big Andrew Bynum trade that offseason.
In a re-draft of 2004 done by HoopsHype, Iguodala goes No. 2 to the then-Charlotte Bobcats, which leaves the Sixers selecting Tony Allen at No. 9. Allen originally went No. 25 to the Boston Celtics in 2004.
Allen did not have the All-Star, Finals MVP career Iguodala has, but he was a key cog for the 2008 champion Celtics. He was also a member of the All-Defensive team six times in his career. He was a huge piece of the “grit and grind” teams of the Memphis Grizzlies, helping them make the Western Conference finals in 2013 for the first time in their franchise history.
One has to wonder how Allen would have worked out for the Sixers in 2004, but considering how both his and Iguodala’s career paths have gone, it makes sense why both players would move up in a re-draft from their original selections.
