After a pretty solid season where the Chicago Bulls made the playoffs and were able to exceed some expectations, they have some questions to answer during this offseason.
The biggest one remains the status of All-Star guard Zach LaVine who recently underwent successful surgery on his knee. The star guard is coming off a strong season where he averaged 24.4 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.6 rebounds as he did it all for the Bulls entering free agency.
However, LaVar Ball, father of Lonzo, says that LaVine is as good as gone. He does not want to play second fiddle to DeMar DeRozan who made a big splash in his first season in the Windy City being named to the All-NBA Second Team.
With that being said, K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago joined 670 The Score and he offered a bit of good news on LaVine for the sake of Bulls fans:
“The safe bet is still that Zach will return (to Chicago),” Johnson said.
However, it doesn’t mean that LaVine will not entertain offers from other teams as Johnson adds:
“I’m just reporting what I was hearing at the Combine – and that is multiple people connected to other teams, agents, etc., the chatter at that Combine, the representation of that chatter is that Zach is very much in play,” Johnson said. “Now that said, the Bulls are still very confident in their ability to re-sign Zach LaVine. Michael Reinsdorf has said it. Arturas Karnisovas has said it. They still have the power to pay him more than any other franchise.”
The status of LaVine is going to be an interesting one to watch moving forward. Chicago would like to keep him and form a tandem with DeRozan that can propel the Bulls back into contention in the East as it is tough to truly stop the two of them when they are both at their healthy best.
