Former Bears QB Nick Foles poised for reunion with Colts’ Frank Reich

The Colts are negotiating a deal to sign former Bears QB Nick Foles, reuniting him with Frank Reich.

The Chicago Bears parted ways with Nick Foles a few weeks ago after they failed to find a trade partner for the veteran quarterback.

The assumption was no one wanted to take on Foles’ contract and give up draft compensation for someone general manager Ryan Poles made clear wasn’t in Chicago’s plans. After all, it appears that there is indeed interest — and from a familiar face.

According to The Athletic’s Zak Keefer, the Colts are negotiating with Foles to bring him to Indianapolis. The destination makes plenty of sense given Foles’ connection to Colts head coach Frank Reich, who served as the offensive coordinator for the Eagles when Foles led Philadelphia to a Super Bowl.

Foles’ tenure in Chicago was a rocky one to say the least. The Bears traded a fourth-round compensatory pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars to bring Foles in to compete with Mitch Trubisky. While Trubisky wound up winning the job, Foles ultimately got his chance in Week 3, when he replaced a benched Trubisky and led the Bears to a comeback victory against the Atlanta Falcons.

That was the certainly the highlight of the season for Foles, and things quickly went downhill. After suffering an injury against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 10, he was replaced by Trubisky for the remainder of the season.

In 2021, the Bears made sweeping changes at the quarterback position. They signed Andy Dalton in free agency before trading up to select Justin Fields with the 11th overall pick in the NFL draft. Foles spent most of the season as the third-string quarterback — getting one start and serving as a backup when Fields and/or Dalton were injured.

Earlier this offseason, the Bears signed Trevor Siemian to serve as Fields’ backup, which all but assured Foles was on his way out of Chicago. Unfortunately, Poles couldn’t find a trade partner and the Bears had to release him and deal with his $7.67 million dead cap hit.
