The Washington Commanders have built a sturdy pipeline from Tuscaloosa to Landover over the years.
Since 2000, The Washington franchise has drafted nine players from Alabama, including two in the 2022 draft in defensive tackle [autotag]Phidarian Mathis[/autotag] and running back [autotag]Brian Robinson Jr.[/autotag] with the 47th and 98th pick respectively.
The Commanders were in need of a running back and elected to go with Robinson due to his ability to excel in short-yardage situations, along with his speed and size says Commanders Wire.
Following the Commanders’ rookie minicamp that was held May 5-7, Robinson raised eyebrows in a new way, by his pass-catching ability.
Fellow Commanders draft pick Phidarian Mathis spoke to reporters at the conclusion of camp, where he was asked about Robinson’s ability to catch a pass out of the backfield. Mathis, who entered Alabama at the same time as Robinson with the 2017 class, says that it’s something that he is used to seeing.
Yeah, I see that every day in practice. I ain’t surprised. You know, B-Rob (is) a great football player. And I can’t wait to see him add a lot of value to this team.
Robinson, a Tuscaloosa native, rushed for over 100 yards five times in 2021 on his way to his first 1,000 yard season. He ended the year with 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns in addition to reeling in 35 catches for 296 yards and two touchdowns.
