Baylor freshman Jeremy Sochan is most commonly projected to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft this year, and one analyst views the New York Knicks as a good fit.
The Knicks currently have the highest odds of landing the 11th pick ahead of the draft lottery on May 17 after finishing with a 37-45 record. Of course, they could jump up but have less than a 3% chance of earning a top-four pick.
Based on the odds, Sochan could still be on the board when New York is on the clock. If he is, ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg told Marc Berman of the New York Post that Sochan would be a good option because of his versatility and all-around game.
I really like Sochan. The size, skill, versatility, development and he’s got an edge to him. They’re going to have to decide what they’re going to do with RJ Barrett. Sochan has a versatility about him and a monster, monster upside as a 3-4 combo. With all the hassle with Julius, where’s their depth at that position?
Sochan, who will turn 19 on May 20, was named the Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year after posting 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 30 games. He produced perhaps his best game of the season on Feb. 26 with 17 points and five rebounds in a win over No. 5 Kansas.
He emerged as an excellent defender with Baylor and affected games in a variety of ways. He has an evolving offensive game but projects to be able to develop into a player that can run the show and create for himself at the next level.
In addition to Sochan, Greenberg also likes Arizona guard Bennedict Mathurin and Wisconsin guard Johnny Davis. The Knicks’ draft focus will certainly become clearer after the lottery, but they have plenty of options to choose from on June 23.
