No. 1 Tennessee wins Auburn series behind Ben Joyce’s historic pitching performance.

No. 1 Tennessee won its seventh Southeastern Conference series of the season with a 5-3 victory over No. 21 Auburn Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Volunteers, coming off their second SEC loss of the season, led 3-0 in the first inning. Drew Gilbert drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Trey Lipscomb hit a two-run home run.

The Tigers (31-14, 12-9 SEC) pulled to within, 3-2, in the fourth inning. Bobby Peirce hit a home run and Cole Foster drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Auburn tied the game in the sixth inning when Peirce recorded an RBI single.

The Vols (40-4, 19-2 SEC) led in the eighth inning when Jordan Beck hit a two-run home run. Beck was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Luc Lipcius was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs for Tennessee.

Ben Joyce (2-1) pitched four innings and surrendered one hit, while striking out six en route to earning the win.

The University of Tennessee announced Joyce recorded a pitch of 105.5 miles per hour. UT uses Yakker Tech data tracking system for statistics.

During the SEC Network+ broadcast of the Tennessee-Auburn series finale, it was noted Joyce’s 105.5 mph pitch is the fastest in college baseball history.

According to UT, Joyce’s 105.5 mph speed would be the second-fastest recorded pitch in Major League Baseball, 0.3 mph behind Aroldis Chapman. Chapman threw a 105.8 mph pitch for the Reds against San Diego on Sept. 24, 2010.
