The Cornhuskers play in their annual spring game this weekend, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.
Everyone knows how critical the 2022 Nebraska football season is for Head Coach Scott Frost. After four years, a 15-29 record, and no bowl games, it was time to see some changes in the Cornhusker program. On offense, Frost has given up play-calling, which seemed unthinkable when he arrived in Lincoln back in 2018. The reigns have now been given to Mark Whipple, who is hoping to recreate his success as the Pitt Panthers offensive coordinator last season. That team finished third in points per game (41.4) and eighth in total offense (486 ypg).
For the defense, the main question is “will anyone fill the void for the Blackshirt left by the departing Cam Taylor-Britt and JoJo Domann. High production players on multiple levels of the defense are gone. Fifth-year defensive coordinator Erik Chinander should have a better idea about his unit after Saturday.
Special teams cost Nebraska multiple games last season, but it’s been a problem in all four years Scott Frost has been in Lincoln. New Special Team Coach Bill Busch will try to repair a unit ranked at the bottom of college football for most major special teams statistics.
Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:
- Date: Saturday, April 9th
- Time: 1:00 p.m. CT
- TV Channel: Big Ten Network
- Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)
Players to watch:
On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Casey Thompson is the one to pay attention to on Saturday. The Texas transfer looks like the early front runner to start the season opener in Dublin.
For the defense, the main question is “will anyone fill the void for the Blackshirt left by the departing Cam Taylor-Britt and JoJo Domann. Look for Tommi Hill to try and establish himself as one of the starting corners during Saturday’s action. Hill is a cornerback and transfer from Arizona State who started 11 games for the Sundevils last year. In the linebacker corps, Caleb Tannor is a player who has shown flashes of brilliance at times but has never put it together for an entire season. The linebacker is in the fifth and final year of his collegiate career. Now is the time to take that next step.
On Special Teams, pay attention to kicker Timmy Bleekrode. The Fordham graduate transfer was 15 of 18 on fields for 2021, with a season-long of 51 yards. As a unit, Nebraska kickers were a combined 8 of 16 in 2021. New special teams coach Bill Busch has already expressed his satisfaction with unit progress during spring ball but admitted there is still a long way.
